Sigismund's Column - Колонна Сигизмунда

The column and statue commemorate King Sigismund III who in 1596 had moved Poland's capital from Krakow to Warsaw. The column was erected where it could be seen by everyone entering the town. Local legend says that the world will end if the king's sword ever touches his pedestal.

Колонна короля Сигизмунда - памятник королю Сигизмунду III на Замковой Площади перед Королевским Дворцом в Варшаве. Король в доспехах рыцаря. В одной руке у него меч, другой рукой опирается на крест.
Король Сигизмунд:
* Правил 45 лет
* Перенёс столицу из Кракова в Варшаву
* Вёл долгую изнурительную войну со Швецией
* Был довольно просвещенным политиком, занимался живописью, скульптурой и даже был известен как часовых дел мастер, любил театр и музыку.

* В 18 веке в Польшу приехал Пётр I. Он увидел колонну Сигизмунда и пришёл восторг. Строил планы увезти колонну в Петербург. Считал, что она бы очень вписалась в архитектуру Петербурга. У власти в Польше находился тогда Август Саксонский. Ему было абсолютно плевать на богатства Польши и он отдал колонну Петру. Но в Польше Пётр так и не нашёл никого, кто бы согласился заняться перевозкой гигантской колонны в Петербург.
*Во время Варшавского Восстания колонна была повалена. Она была восстановлена в 1949. 

     Местная легенда гласит, что Конец Света наступит в том случае, если меч Сигизмунда когда-либо коснётся постамента.

Elvas is one of the greatest and most heavily fortified frontier towns in Europe, with military fortifications that are among the most sophisticated and best preserved in the continent. Sitting just 12km (7.5miles) from the border with Spain, 17th century star-shaped fortifications with gates, curtain walls, moats and bastions surround the town, along with two fortresses (more here)
The Portugeses are struggling this place to be considered World Heritage Site

New Year in China - Новый Год в Китае

I got this official postcard from Chine today on the Eve of the traditional celebration of the New Year in China
The Chinese celebrate it on the first New Moon between the 20.01 and the 20.02.
This year it's on the 3 of February.
There are 2 types of design of New Year cards in China - one type is close to the European and the other is their traditional postcards.
In the national design there is a lot of red - the symbol of fire and passion.
Intricate drawing of dragons, lions, elephants and other creatures are not always clear for a European.
On this card there is some explanation of the drawing.
"The plant named "evergreen" combined with the elephant (a homophone of "everything") symbolizes a happy return of the new year.

Я получила эту новогоднюю китайскую открытку в канун традиционного Нового Года в Китае. Обычно его празднуют в первое новолуние между 20 января и 20 февраля. В этом году Новый Год в Китае встречают 3 февраля.

У китайцев два типа новогодних открыток - первый очень близок к европейскому. Второй их национальный тип. Судя по всему эта открытка - национальный тип поздравительной китайской новогодней открытки: в ней очень много красного цвета - символ огня, страсти. Замысловатые драконы, львы, слоны не всегда понятны нам, европейцам. Но на этой открытке есть хорошее объяснение для всех символов.

Слово "слон" является у китайцев омофоном слова "всё". 

Поэтому надпись Everything Retuns Anew китайцы могу трактовать двояко

One more purchase for my WWF collection is the set of 4 stamps from Mocambique
On all four stamps there are different pictures of Hippotragus equinus
It's the second largest antelope, rahter strong. It doesn't have serious enemies except lions and humans.

Ink and wash painting (Китай)- Гохуа (Китай)

A card with traditional Chinese ink and wash painting. This kind of painting is considered close to calligraphy. Silk or special paper is used as a background. My friend told me that she had practised in this painting. It's not an easy thing - you mustn't make the same line on the paper with a brush twice or the drawing can be ruined as the paper is very-very thin. On this card there is traditional Chinese motifs - hills, trees, buildings...

And a nice New Year stamp. I really love this postcard!

Send a postcard - save a tree

Today I was looking something in the old paper box and came across a postcard that was sent to me long ago. I forgot about it and now I'm so happy that I get it back to my collection.
It's a bigger sized double card by the artist Marie Buchfink
To tell you the truth I don't quite like big-sized cards. But this is a special one for me, as I'm a big trees-lover.
 Please read the text on the other side and you will understand why it is special.


And one more thing. The envelope! It's so mysterious and reminds me of the books by James Fenimore Cooper that I love when I was a child
